The Kremlin reacts to Trump's threats to the BRICS

"Apparently, experts need to explain the BRICS agenda to Mr. Trump in more detail," the Russian presidential spokesman said.

The BRICS are not discussing the creation of a common currency but are talking about new investment platforms, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday, commenting on US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs for trying to create an alternative currency to the dollar.

"Here we should remember the words of our president [Vladimir Putin], which are much more important and significant for us. The fact is that the BRICS are not talking about creating a common currency. There has been no talk and there is no talk about creating a common currency," he stressed.

The spokesman clarified that the BRICS "are talking about creating new joint investment platforms that would allow joint investments in third countries, mutual investments." "It seems that experts need to explain the BRICS agenda in more detail to Mr. Trump," he concluded.

Trump previously warned that the BRICS countries would face 100% tariffs if they try to undermine the dollar and seek to impose a new currency. "There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade, or anywhere else. And any country that tries to do so should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to the United States!" the president wrote on his social networks.

International analyst Iñaki Gil de San Vicente believes that the BRICS are not the first to seek ways to promote fair trade in mutual interest and free from the hegemony of a single currency.
